Introduction to Dance with Children with Autism

Dance with Children who have Additional Support needs……………………

So what do we do in our sessions, what are they all about?

Firstly, we enter into their world accepting completely where they are without judgment or trying to change a thing! The classes are based on the invocation of the vitality energy, the element of fun and energy of running like the animals, freedom, jumping to the stars, to feel vitality is a human right that the children have to say yes this is me, this is a new day and I am going to have fun. We can dance with this vitality energy in many different ways. For example if a child is very energetic we need to move to harmonize this and not express this and after the harmonization work with his or her creative impulses to explore new movements, new sounds, new sensations giving the child the space to explore for him/herself.

Each Session is structured

Each class is structured and so routine is a very important aspect, we are not free dancing without any aims, objectives or guidelines. We are proposing movements and interactions that are full of meaning whether that is exploring, creating, feeling, jumping, being still, holding hands, relaxing etc. The impulses of Creativity start from when the child is very very young and is able to make sounds, move his body. When the baby is allowed to move freely and make sounds this is when it starts to develop.shepton_aut_class_10

Creativity and Music

For Autistic children the development of their creativity is definitely something that will allow them to slowly come out of their withdrawal from the world and everybody around them. The dances are fun and work with the imagination, the imaginary world, very important for children keeping alive the lucid, dreamlike tendencies, working with and through rhythm of music to connect with them firstly, getting into their world and developing from there. Musical rhythms are order, are reality and believe it or not the first step on the ladder of our human evolution.

 Some examples

The dances for  children are performed in a group, playing is a fundamental element to encourage and facilitate the spontaneous movements where each child is able to rediscover their individual, natural rhythm and from here to seek new rhythms and then to integrate to the global rhythm of others. Some of the exercises and movements are:

    • 1. Physiological walk and recovering the chest in the walk
    • 2. Reinforcement of synergic movement - integration of the right and left hemispheres of the brain
    • 3. Rhythmic dances and variations
    • 4. Co-ordination and rhythmic synchronization in two and in group
    • 5. Games of Vitality
    • 6. Games of Creative development
    • 7. Creative dances
    • 8. Slow movements targeting the release of the tension in the neck, in the shoulders and in the hips
    • 9. Slow dances which stimulate the awakening of the sensitivity in the encounter and with ourselves

Every child is supported and integration happens through the happiness and fun of playing through the dance.
