Dance and movement as a therapy has the power to heal and transform life, has the power to inspire beauty, creativity, wellbeing and happiness through movements full of meaning.
From an early age, the culture we live in denies us the path of expressing our feelings. We then go to school and our imagination is not accepted because it is not understood. Our true creativity is not cultivated.
When children are taught to not cry, not move, not express their anger for example they learn to control their natural bodily responses to suppress their feelings and then their deeper emotions. We then meet years later, adults who are afraid of life.
Dance movement psychotherapy is a creative therapeutic process that fosters healing and transformation through movement. DMP is a relational process in which client/s and therapist engage creatively using body movement and dance to assist integration of emotional, cognitive, physical, social and spiritual aspects of self. The philosophical orientation of DMP is based on the intrinsic belief in the inter-relationship between psyche, soma and spirit as evidenced in the potential held in creative processes.
With the emphasis on the feeling body DMP offers us chances to imagine, create, love and live.
