3 Simple Techniques for Calming your Body

When we feel stressed and anxious the cortisol that runs through the body system can feel so uncomfortable and prevent us from being able to make wise and healthy decisions, sleeping or even digesting our food properly.

I wanted to share three simple techniques that you may find helpful for calming your body, mind and perhaps enable you to get good nights sleep or to calm yourself enough to be able to discern the chaotic and fear driven impulses between those of the gentler, heart healing responses.

Technique one

Move to Music

Put some music on and dance and move around with attention and focus on your lower body. Inviting all the energy in your mind to come on down and be grounded in your lower limbs. Explore different ways of moving your legs and feet and make contact with the ground beneath yourself.

Perhaps use reggae music as it has a rhythm that you can move to. As you are enjoying this dance visualise your bones and muscles responding to the music and feel the relief and the release of just moving to the beat in your body.

If difficult thoughts and anxieties are persistent don’t fight with them, notice this difficulty and tell yourself in this moment I am just going to ‘dance’, connect with the rhythm and let my body move in the way it wants to move paying attention to focusing all the energy into the legs, lower back and spine and somehow connecting the easiness of being able to do this into your heart.

Technique two

Heart Health

Sitting on a chair with your spine straight and your feet flat on the floor. Focusing on your breathing take a breath in to the count of four, hold for a short while and then exhale to the count of five. Do this several times until you begin to feel present to yourself.

Now as you breath in (continuing in this rhythm) visualise a white healing light of loving kindness filling all your cells and moving around your body and as you exhale this light moves out the soles of your feet into the earth. Repeat this several times until you begin to feel a little clearer.

Lastly, as you inhale the white healing light of loving kindness is going to meet your inner energy and together they are going to move through all the spaces in your body, filling up all your cells like bubbles and again as you exhale this energy is going to go through the soles of your feet to be recycled into the earth. Do this several times until you feel calmer.

Technique three

Bare feet on the earth

With bare feet spend 10 to 20 mins walking slowly on the earth, in your garden, in the park and allow the earths energies to recharge your body. Imagine / invite /visualise / sense all the frenetic and chaotic energy within your body melting away a little bit more minute by minute.

Notice the trees, the flowers, the blades of grass. Notice the colours, the smells. Pay attention to the sounds you can hear. Notice how the air feels on your skin. Ask yourself: how am I holding my shoulders? If I stand still with my feet hip distance apart can I get a sense of my centre and move gently rocking forward and back or side to side? What is like for me ?

Perhaps as you are out in nature you might consider a prayer or a poem or a gentle petition asking for help with your stressed system. You don’t have to be religious at all and I am certainly not asking this its just that sometimes reaching out toward a higher power just with our words and our heart can be a great help (this is part of AA and is an essential part of the recovery process).
