Milonga Moon

(A special performance for special children)
Two scenes plus a special song at the end.

The Story:

This is a musical story about discovering beauty amidst the chaos that comes into our lives. A story about protest because we want to do things in our way!

A character of a wizard introduces the story and helps the participants in each stage.
The children are in their bedroom, they are angry because they do not want to go to sleep and they do not want to clean up their room.
The wizard stops them complaining by inviting them to put order in their room by telling them a story about the origin of their parents.
This calms the children and prepares them to go to sleep. The wizard sings a song to help them sleep peacefully.

As a curtain call, the children will dance and sing a special song dedicated to all who have special needs.

Intention / Goal:

We intend to show during the performance the children’s growing ability to form relationships, the improvement in social interactions and how they have discovered and learnt new ways of expressing themselves.
The use of several art therapies such as movement and dance therapy (Play and dance casts), music therapy (percussion and other instruments) and art in a therapeutic manner (the preparation of the props for the stage) will inform this performance and show that the sessions leading up to this creative piece have been an exploration and experiential, led and discovered by the children themselves. Self-esteem and confidence are just some of the benefits that the children will develop throughout this project.

Stage:

Depending on how many children participate in the performance the size of the stage needs to be at least 11.50 x 16 ft. (3.50 mts x 5 mts) for four (4) to six (6) children
It will be decorated with props (artworks that the children themselves are going to paint based on the artwork and drawings for the stage, for the story)

Script:

CHARACTERS:

THE WIZARD: Is the narrator and the main singer in the play. She/he will guide the children and help them during the scenes.
Costume: Cloak with stars, moon, a coned hat, and a magic wand.

CHILDREN: They will play themselves through their play and dances.
Dressing: They need to wear pyjamas or sleeping clothes

PARENTS / CARERS: These characters will be in the play only if the children need their support or encouragement during the scenes.
In which case, they will play helpers to the wizard. They can wear clothes or costumes that match with the wizards.

Scene I
The stage is bright with a messy background of soft toys and clothes. We can see chaos everywhere.
In the background the bed, stars and the moon.
The wizard is with the children forming a semi-circle in the middle of the stage.
When the lights come on, he/she starts to encourage movements.

WIZARD:
(To the audience)
So welcome to our short piece “The Milonga Moon” that hopes to capture a day in the life of the children.
(To the children)
Hello children! Are you ready to go to the bed?
Shall we put all our toys away and clean up our bedroom? There are toys everywhere.

CHILDREN:
(They look angry because they do not want to clean the toys and the song “My Toys” starts. The song will be sung or played back by the wizard)
All the children are moving individually with help from their carers / teachers / parents if needed.

“My toys are all together
They are right in front of me
Are they underneath my bed ?
I don’t know if they are lost.

The toys they are broken
And I don’t understand why.
When I found the car
And the wheels far away

(Chorus)
And then…
My mother said: Clean up!
My father said: share them!
My nanny said: take care
My grampy said: Clean Up!
But it does not depend on me
My toys just want to play
And I only want, just that
To see them laugh

I found three dolls heads on the floor
Fifteen wheels and all the blocks
All my toys are almost broken
And my books are ripped apart.

And the batteries disappeared
I don’t know where they are
They are lost, they are rotten
And the cars cannot move on

(Chorus)
Then…
My mother said: Clean up!
My father said: share them!
My nanny said: take care
My grampy said: Clean Up!
But it does not depend of me
My toys just want to play
And I only want, just that
To see them laugh”

WIZARD:
(Walking around the group)

But mummy said that you all have to sleep right now!!!!!!

(When it is possible, the lights go down to 80% and the children start to dance around and then start to sing the song
“I told you mummy, I told you”)

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/122283565″ width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

I told you mummy, I told you
I don’t’ like to sleep alone
I am surrounded by teddy bears
But they don’t care when I cry

I told you mummy, I told you
That the silence makes me cry
So now I am full of toys
That make a lot of noise

(Chorus):
But thank you so much
For your love and understanding
But now I cannot sleep
And the night-time is too long
Then, I know what we need to do
I am telling you know
I will go to sleep with you
And daddy sleeps in the dining room

I told you, mummy, I told you
That the darkness makes me cry
Now I have so many lights
And the night is like a party

I told you mummy, I told you
I am thirsty in the night
So you give me a glass of water
But I want a cup of tea.

(Chorus):
But thank you so much
For your love and understanding
But now I cannot sleep
And the night-time is too long
Then, I know what we need to do
I am telling you know
I will go to sleep with you
And daddy sleeps in the dining room

Lights go off – end of scene 1

Scene 2
Stage now is clean (no soft toys). In the background the lamppost, the mailbox, and the “guapo” will replace the bed.
The wizard and children are in the same position as at the beginning of the scene 1.

WIZARD:
Hey! look over there…. (the wizard points to the “malevo” in the background)
Do you know who he is? Where he comes from?
He is from Argentina, my father is from there too, and he is a popular character there.
He likes to dance a lot. He likes to dance Tango.
And… what is the characteristic sound in the tango

CHILDREN
Chan Chan!

WIZARD:
Yes! Chan Chan is always at the end of all tango songs….
Alternatively, at the beginning? I do not remember…
Can you help me?
(The song “Chan Chan starts and the children dance a tango)
(Suggested lighting: red and yellow)

Some people ask me, why I would like
To know the Tango, like my daddy.
I know the lyrics, because I study them
Listen to the part that comes now
CHAN CHAN

I am very moved, when I am singing
I tell you now, it is like that
I am “tanguero”, this is the truth
Listen to the part that comes now
CHAN CHAN

Chorus:
I know that you always are
At the end, always there
CHAN CHAN don’t leave me alone
A tango starts now
If we don’t have “bandoneon”
Somewhere you need to be
Come in, come in
Please, stay there… no
It’s better here

WIZARD
CHAN CHAN tell me, are you OK here?

CHILDREN:
NO!

Mummy is cooking my fish and chips
And this makes me sing this song
cos in the kitchen, there is a radio
And from it, the tango begins to play
CHAN CHAN

Millions CHAN CHANes, in each tango we can find
But the one that I sing, is always the same
But it doesn’t matter, cos the important thing
Is my way to sing
CHAN CHAN

Chorus:
I know that you always are
At the end, always there
CHAN CHAN don’t leave me alone
A tango starts now
If we don’t have “bandoneon”
Somewhere you need to be
Come in, come in
Please, stay there… no
It’s better here

WIZARD:
Very good children! You know better than me how to sing a Tango…
And after dancing, I can see that now you are ready to go to sleep
And let me sing this song that will help you to have sweet dreams.

(Lights go down to 80%)
Children find a place to sleep and start to relax with soft and sweet movements.

This wizard’s wish
Is that all the children
When they go to sleep
Feel the love around
And it comes dancing
In a tango song
It is a miracle
Of cuddles

Shining tango
In knitted covers
Faces of moon
Warm little hands
And with my children
I am dancing
I want to cuddle you
And make you sleep with love.

(Chorus)
Tanguera moon
Will come to rock us
And then the wizard
Closes the curtain
A choir of stars
And the singer
Comes to sing to us
From the shining light
Nobody come
To break this spell
Untie the cuddles
Ribbons and bows
Tango of love

This wizard’s wish
Is that every child
When they wake up
Feels the love around
And make clothes
The colour of tango
An orange sun
Will hold you.

Tango on the corner
Of the bright smiles
Tango that softens
The little shoes
It plays like as child
It is charming to see
The dirty faces
Of the happy children

(Chorus)
Tanguera moon
Will come to rock us
And then the wizard
Closes the curtain
A choir of stars
And the singer
Comes to sing to us
From the shining light
Please, nobody come
To break this spell
Untie the cuddles
Ribbons and bows
Tango of love

Please, nobody come
To break this spell
Untie the cuddles
Ribbons and bows
Tango of love

(Lights go off – children are sleeping)
End of scene 2

Out of programme song:

The wizard comes to say well done to each child
In addition, thanks the audience.

WIZARD:
(To the audience)
And before you all go please join us in our final song, which is a celebration of life.
“The circle of love” is our special song and it will be sung for all of us as [name of each child] share their creativity with the world:

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/122283288″ width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Little, little birds of freedom
Are the little hands meant for play
Wings of plasticine made of love
It’s so good we can hold you so close
And if someone cannot hold you so close
Be happy
Because this circle is for everyone
And it has no shape

Little, little sponges of light
Are your bright eyes when you smile
Eyes of light brighter than the moon
It’s so beautiful to see
And if someone cannot see with his eyes
Be happy
Because in this circle the colours they smell
and you can touch them

Little, little shells are the ears
That listen to the song of the sea
Laughing, whispering, playing, singing
And never ending stories
And if someone cannot hear the sounds
Be happy
Because this circle is made up of kisses
And hands that sing!

Thousands of roads are to walk
With your legs you’ll get there
Steps, little steps trying to go up to the sky
You can jump
And if someone cannot walk with his legs
Be happy
Because this circle, circle of love
Will find you if you hide.
